A general update on life

We celebrated Pioneer day by singing a “Pioneer medley” in Sacrament meeting – “Pioneer children sang as they walked” and “Whenever I think about pioneers”. Lige and Ellis sang with us, and they did a GREAT job, much to their parents' relief! You all know how it is (even those without children can feel it, too!) - your kid practices beautifully all week, then the time comes and they get up and do silly nervous things the whole time. But none of that happened, and we all had a fun time. And I think we might have sounded ok, too :)

Our landlord called us the day before we went on vacation asking if we wanted to buy our house from him.  That gave us something to think about on our vacation!  We left a message on our landlord's voicemail when we came back with a verbal “offer” but we haven't heard back from him yet. We did a lot of math and thinking and praying, and felt like even if we move in a year and a half (when the post-doc will end), it will still be a smart move, barring any unexpected drastic event. We'll see how it turns out.

In other news, we had our first Maryland crab cake this week, it was very nice, though remarkably expensive. We picked a bad time to try the seafood, it's gotten dramatically more expensive since the gulf oil spill. But we had a gift certificate to a seafood/southern food restaurant on the Potomac river, so we weren't going to waste the chance by ordering steak :)

In kid news, Lige is counting down the days to Kindergarten. He got a backpack and a bunch of his other school supplies this week. He got a camouflage backpack, because it was the only non-girly backpack (in the kid section) that didn't have a person looking mean on it. He loves it, but I was bothered by the whole lack of selection thing. Oh yeah, there was a Toy Story back pack, too, but much more expensive. So I guess I should say, it was the only one in the appropriate age and price range. At K-mart.

Ellis is getting very excited to help Lillian learn to use the toilet after Lige goes to school. She is the official toilet-training assistant. She tells just about everyone she sees about her important upcoming responsibility.

Lillian is also excited about this, we think. But, of course, none so excited as I am!
